Insiders who bought Energy Focus, Inc. (NASDAQ:EFOI) stock lover the last 12 months are probably not as affected by last week’s 10% loss. Reason being, despite the recent loss, insiders original purchase value of US$1.10m is now worth US$1.48m.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by CEO, President Chiao-Chieh Huang for US$600k worth of shares, at about US$2.29 per share. We do like to see buying, but this purchase was made at well below the current price of US$2.81. Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Energy Focus insiders own about US$9.2m worth of shares (which is 49% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Energy Focus shares in the last quarter. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging.
