Insiders who bought US$1.08m worth of BioCardia, Inc. (NASDAQ:BCDA) stock in the last year have seen some of their losses recouped as the stock gained 23% last week. However, the purchase is proving to be a costly gamble, since losses made by insiders have totalled US$224k since the time of purchase.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At BioCardia

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Director Simon Stertzer bought US$498k worth of shares at a price of US$1.25 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$0.95 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.
