Insiders Sold US$2.9m Of Kosmos Energy Stock Possibly Sending Warning Sign
Kosmos Energy Ltd. KOS | 2.92 | +8.55% |
Last week, Kosmos Energy Ltd.'s (NYSE:KOS) stock jumped 24%, but insiders who sold US$2.9m worth of stock in over the past year are likely to be in a better position. Selling at an average price of US$3.04, which is higher than the current price, may have been the wisest decision for these insiders as their investment would have been worth less now than when they sold.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
Kosmos Energy Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chairman & CEO, Andrew Inglis, sold US$865k worth of shares at a price of US$3.12 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$1.24). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Insider Ownership Of Kosmos Energy
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Kosmos Energy insiders own about US$10m worth of shares. That equates to 2.1% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
So What Does This Data Suggest About Kosmos Energy Insiders?
There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Kosmos Energy insiders. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
