The LSAD is a directed-energy transportable defense system that utilizes a high-density laser beam to provide rapid, precise, and cost-effective defense against unauthorized drones. It directly addresses the increasing use of drones in conflict zones and for illegal activities.
Transportation-ready, quickly deployable, and ruggedly built, LSAD is designed for integration into existing target recognition defense systems, and activates semi-automatically, with or without a human operator.
Key Features and Capabilities:
Targeting: Specifically designed to neutralize low-cost, small-scale Groups 1-2 Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), including swarm threats. Integrates a tracking system that captures and follows a target starting at a distance of 2 km.
Deployment: Mobile and modular for quick deployment in critical zones. The unit integrates the laser source, a liquid cooling system, power distribution, and a gimbal that rotates the laser head and cameras for target tracking and distance measurement.
Technology: Employs a near infrared (NIR) continuous wave (CW) fiber laser with high beam quality, at a power of 4 kW. Integrates high-performance optics and auto focusing within the range of 50 - 1,000 m.
Effectiveness: Delivers a tiered response ranging from sensor dazzling (soft-kill disruption) - temporarily blinding onboard cameras and interfering with guidance systems - to thermal structural damage (hard-kill neutralization). In high-energy mode, the LSAD disables a target in 1 to 10 seconds at a distance of up to 1 km.
Both the system and laser head are manufactured in Lake Mary, Florida, with globally sourced components. Fonon Technologies is an affiliate of Laser Photonics, and the two companies share common facilities and technical resources as part of the LASE group of companies. LSAD was named a finalist in the U.S. Autonomy, AI and Cyber Critical Technology Challenge of November 2025.
As affiliated companies, Fonon Technologies and Laser Photonics are jointly partnering with defense contractors to integrate the LSAD technology into existing military infrastructure to help meet the urgent need for robust, cost-effective counter-drone systems for the U.S. military, government agencies, and allied partners.
