INVEST FOR THE LONG TERM BUT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF VOLATILITY
Asked recently what was driving equity moves during a volatile session, Tony Ghee, head of equity investments for the chief investment office at Bank of America, quickly turned the conversation to the longer-term outlook.
"It's so easy to get caught up in the minutiae of the day," said Ghee. "The question longer term for clients and investors is, where is the market heading? In our view, the market still has room to run. That is being driven by the strong earnings and a strong economic backdrop of resilient consumers. Those things continue to drive the market forward."
Ghee sees transformative technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and data automation as key long-term investing trends, whether investors are interested in betting early or later in high-profile companies making initial public offerings (IPOs) such as SpaceX, OpenAI and Anthropic.
"You're going to find some investors who have a lot of enthusiasm and want to get into the trade with one of these upcoming IPOs," he said. "And you'll find some investors who will stay out of the IPO initially because they want to wait and see where the market ultimately settles."
And along with a focus on emerging technologies, other investment areas he likes include infrastructure, such as updating of power grids to support new technologies, and both physical and cyber security investment opportunities.
But while Ghee is most focused on the longer term, he cited the importance of taking tactical advantage of short-term market moves.
"We've seen in volatility this year that it quiets back down and it comes back up. That presents great opportunities for investors who truly believe that economic activity will continue to be strong," he said, adding that moments of market weakness "present strong buying opportunities."
