Marqeta (MQ) Stock Falls As Profit Gains Meet Slower Growth Outlook
Marqeta, Inc. MQ | 0.00 |
Marqeta stock just handed investors a 7% one day drop, yet the earnings story leans far more toward a profitability grind than a collapse. Coming into the print, the stock had been roughly flat over three months, with only a small gain over 30 days. Then the market met a payments platform that printed about US$176m in Q2 net revenue and roughly US$8m in net income, its second straight profitable quarter.
The real headline is margin power. Adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization reached US$37m in the quarter, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of about 21% of revenue. The selloff looks driven more by emotion and shorter term growth worries than by any clear breakdown in the income statement. This context sets up the rest of this report.
Is Marqeta’s 2.6x trailing P/S multiple a sign the market is overpaying for recent profitability, or is the DCF gap creating a misread on value? See how the current share price lines up in our valuation analysis for Marqeta

Evaluating Marqeta’s Profit-Led Growth Story
Bulls argue Marqeta can use its payments platform to shift from volume driven growth to a mix of higher quality revenue and sustained profitability. Q2 goes a fair way toward proving that. Total payment volume reached US$120b with 32% year on year growth and non Block volume growing more than twice as fast as Block. That supports the idea that the business is broadening beyond its largest customer while still scaling the core engine.
The profitability milestones look even more important. Marqeta delivered about US$122m of gross profit and US$37m of adjusted EBITDA at roughly a 21% margin, plus a second straight GAAP net profit of about US$8m. Management now guides to full year adjusted EBITDA growth in the low 30s% range and GAAP net income in the high US$20m range. For a thesis built on operating leverage and profit durability, those are concrete, directionally aligned markers.

The bearish narrative around Marqeta is that slowing growth, take rate pressure and customer concentration would eventually cap margins and make recent profitability look fragile. This quarter does not show a collapse, but it does surface the growth drag that critics worry about. Management now guides Q3 net revenue growth of only 6% to 8% and gross profit growth of 5% to 7%. That is a clear step down from the 17% year on year revenue and gross profit growth just reported.
Customer concentration concerns also move from theory to timetable. Block is already diversifying new issuance, with Marqeta expecting a declining share through the second half and very little new issuance by year end on that channel. Combined with a slightly lower gross profit take rate and a 7% one day share price drop, the milestone missed here is not profitability. It is proof that growth can stay comfortably ahead of these headwinds.
