ONEOK (OKE) Stock Ignores Record Throughput As Margin Questions Persist

The market barely flinched at ONEOK’s latest report. The stock slipped about 0.5% to around US$87, even as the company put up another quarter of heavy lifting on the income statement. Net income came in near US$966 million, or US$1.53 per share, and adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization touched about US$2.12b.

For a pipeline and midstream operator often viewed as a bond proxy with growth optionality, that muted price reaction sits awkwardly against record throughput, upgraded full year guidance and a richer long term earnings and free cash flow story that the market is still pricing cautiously.

ONEOK bull case: throughput growth hits key hurdles

Bulls argue ONEOK is a durable, fee based cash engine with visible growth as projects ramp and volumes build. Q2 gives that view some backing. Adjusted EBITDA reached US$2.12b, up 7% year on year, while net income of about US$967m and EPS of US$1.53 supported a second raise to 2026 guidance, with EBITDA guidance now at US$8.35b. That is consistent with management’s mid to high single digit EBITDA growth ambition over 5 to 7 years. Record NGL raw feed throughput and 8% higher blended and refined product volumes show the system absorbing higher activity, helped by projects like the Denver expansion and growing Permian volumes. Export JVs are largely contracted and the LPG dock is already around 80% subscribed for 200kbd. These are concrete milestones for a volume driven growth story, even if margin mix was softer from higher ethane.

ONEOK bear case: margin, leverage and capex concerns persist

The bear narrative centers on spread volatility, heavy capital needs and leverage that could cap free cash flow progress. Q2 does not fully clear those worries. Management explicitly flagged margin pressure from mix shifts toward ethane in NGLs and also expects lower earnings in Natural Gas Pipelines in the second half as Permian differentials compress. That aligns with concerns about spread sensitivity. Capex for 2026 is still a sizeable US$2.7b to US$3.2b and is set to accelerate into year end as projects complete. Longer term, growth capex is guided to a US$2.0b to US$2.5b run rate. While tax benefits of roughly US$2.6b push out cash taxes to around 2031 and help near term cash flow, the combination of high ongoing spend and acquisition related debt means leverage and free cash flow are not yet de risked.
