PPG Industries (PPG) Stock Falls As Margin Pressure Undercuts Growth

PPG Industries went into this earnings print as a value story in coatings, trading on a mid teens P/E and sitting below some intrinsic value estimates. The stock still dropped about 6% on the day to US$111.83. That move reflects how sharply investors reacted to the quality of this quarter’s profits, not just the headline revenue growth.

The key issue this time is margin pressure. Adjusted earnings per share of US$2.23 were supported by an adjusted EBITDA margin only just above 17%. For a chemicals and coatings group that emphasizes pricing power, that margin squeeze is what the market is now factoring into the share price.

Is PPG Industries now a classic value setup after this 6% drop, or is margin pressure a sign the stock deserves a lower multiple? See how today’s price stacks up against our valuation analysis for PPG Industries

PPG bullish story: growth engines vs tight margins

The optimistic view on PPG Industries is that enterprise growth investments, aerospace and marine strength, and cost programs can lift organic growth and margins at the same time. This quarter shows partial progress. Net sales grew 7% with 4% organic growth, and 8 of 9 businesses increased, which lines up with the share gain narrative in auto OEM and packaging. Aerospace and Protective & Marine again delivered double digit growth, and Global Architectural Coatings EBITDA margin reached 19.4%, up 100 bps, which supports the premium mix and sustainability story. Pricing also covered about 90% of cost inflation with a June exit price run rate of about 3%. However, the group adjusted EBITDA margin just above 17% and Industrial Coatings margin at 15.9% indicate that pricing and efficiency gains are not yet flowing cleanly through to profit.

PPG bearish concerns: margin strain and demand pockets

The cautious view is that margin pressure, contract pricing and end market softness may cap earnings power for PPG Industries. Several elements in this quarter support that concern. The stock fell about 6% on the day, and Industrial Coatings margin slipped about 70 bps to 15.9% despite 5% organic growth, which reflects cost inflation and index linked pricing in that segment. Automotive Refinish saw double digit organic declines and pulled down Performance Coatings margin by 300 bps to 22.7%. Management also guided to flat to down about 100 bps adjusted EBITDA margin in Q3 and flagged modest margin compression in Industrial Coatings in the second half due to contract timing. In contrast, Global Architectural Coatings and Protective & Marine margins improved and full year EPS guidance of US$7.70 to US$8.10 was reaffirmed, which tempers the more bearish earnings risk narrative.
