Results: SCYNEXIS, Inc. Confounded Analyst Expectations With A Surprise Profit
SCYNEXIS, Inc. SCYX | 0.00 |
The quarterly results for SCYNEXIS, Inc. (NASDAQ:SCYX) were released last week, making it a good time to revisit its performance. In addition to smashing expectations with revenues of US$235k, SCYNEXIS delivered a surprise statutory profit of US$0.63 per share, a notable improvement compared to analyst expectations of a loss. Following the result, the analysts have updated their earnings model, and it would be good to know whether they think there's been a strong change in the company's prospects, or if it's business as usual. So we gathered the latest post-earnings forecasts to see what estimates suggest is in store for next year.
After the latest results, the consensus from SCYNEXIS' three analysts is for revenues of US$1.73m in 2026, which would reflect a sizeable 91% decline in revenue compared to the last year of performance. Per-share losses are expected to explode, reaching US$2.91 per share. Before this earnings announcement, the analysts had been modelling revenues of US$1.15m and losses of US$4.08 per share in 2026. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a sizeable increase to their revenue forecasts while also reducing the estimated loss as the business grows towards breakeven.
It will come as no surprise to learn thatthe analysts have increased their price target for SCYNEXIS 8.9% to US$36.55on the back of these upgrades. Fixating on a single price target can be unwise though, since the consensus target is effectively the average of analyst price targets. As a result, some investors like to look at the range of estimates to see if there are any diverging opinions on the company's valuation. Currently, the most bullish analyst values SCYNEXIS at US$44.64 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$32.00. Analysts definitely have varying views on the business, but the spread of estimates is not wide enough in our view to suggest that extreme outcomes could await SCYNEXIS shareholders.
These estimates are interesting, but it can be useful to paint some more broad strokes when seeing how forecasts compare, both to the SCYNEXIS' past performance and to peers in the same industry. Over the past five years, revenues have declined around 0.7% annually. Worse, forecasts are essentially predicting the decline to accelerate, with the estimate for an annualised 99% decline in revenue until the end of 2026. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 9.0% per year. So it's pretty clear that, while it does have declining revenues, the analysts also expect SCYNEXIS to suffer worse than the wider industry.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing to take away is that the analysts reconfirmed their loss per share estimates for next year. Fortunately, they also upgraded their revenue estimates, although our data indicates it is expected to perform worse than the wider industry. There was also a nice increase in the price target, with the analysts clearly feeling that the intrinsic value of the business is improving.
Keeping that in mind, we still think that the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for investors to consider. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for SCYNEXIS going out to 2028, and you can see them free on our platform here..
