Solar power generation surpasses natural gas in first five months of 2026 in CAISO, EIA says

- Utility-scale solar generation surpassed natural gas generation in the regions served by the grid operator California Independent System Operator (CAISO) for the first five months of 2026, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said Tuesday.

As per EIA data, solar electricity generation in CAISO over the first five months of 2026 increased 21% compared with the same period in 2024, and natural gas generation decreased by 60%.

The EIA added that while utility-scale solar power generation capacity has grown in CAISO from April 2024 to April 2026, up 19% to 25 gigawatts (GW), natural gas generation capacity has remained unchanged at 29 GW in the same timeframe. Battery storage capacity has meanwhile risen 79% in the same period to 16 GW.
