SpaceX (SPCX) Stock Reprices Around Heavy Spending Despite Fast Revenue Growth
SpaceX SPCX | 0.00 |
Space Exploration Technologies stock came into this earnings season already under pressure, with the share price down about 28% over the past month. The Q2 print then triggered a sharper reassessment, with the stock dropping another 13.6% to US$108.27 by the close on August 5.
The surprise is that the headline story is not revenue disappointment. SpaceX posted US$7.8b in Q2 revenue and adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization of US$3.5b, while still reporting a quarterly net loss of US$541m. The key question for investors is how much loss they are willing to tolerate alongside this level of growth and scale.

SpaceX bull story leans on revenue scale and cash engines
Bulls argue Space Exploration Technologies is proving that Starlink and AI compute can fund the Starship and infrastructure build. Q2 does provide support. Revenue reached US$7.8b with adjusted EBITDA of US$3.5b while the net loss narrowed to US$541m. Connectivity generated US$4.3b of revenue with US$2.6b of adjusted EBITDA and around 1.7m new consumer subscribers at roughly US$66 ARPU, plus more than US$6b of US government awards. AI revenue of US$2.6b grew very quickly quarter on quarter on the back of large cloud hosting deals and Grok and X monetization. Management now has about US$100b of cash and a US$47.5b backlog. These are tangible milestones toward the narrative of scale, diversified growth engines and funding capacity.
Bear case focuses on cash burn, leverage and market patience
The core worry is that SpaceX is structurally loss making and increasingly reliant on debt and equity to finance very heavy projects. Q2 results give that concern real weight. Capex hit US$18.4b, with about US$15.8b tied to AI compute, which pushed free cash flow further into negative territory despite higher adjusted EBITDA. The company raised US$25b in bonds and now carries almost US$29b of long term debt, while analysts flag scenarios where net debt could reach about US$400b by 2031 if current plans continue. Shares have fallen about 28% over 30 days and declined 13.6% after the print, suggesting investors are questioning how long this level of spend can continue before profitability, which management does not expect before 2027.
