Talphera, Inc. (NASDAQ:TLPH) insiders who bought shares over the past year were rewarded handsomely last week. The stock rose 14%, resulting in a US$6.7m rise in the company's market capitalisation, translating to a gain of 79% on their initial investment. In other words, the original US$125.0k purchase is now worth US$224.0k.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Talphera

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by CEO & Director Vincent Angotti for US$125k worth of shares, at about US$0.59 per share. We do like to see buying, but this purchase was made at well below the current price of US$1.05. Because it occurred at a lower valuation, it doesn't tell us much about whether insiders might find today's price attractive.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Our data suggests Talphera insiders own 1.4% of the company, worth about US$718k. I generally like to see higher levels of ownership.

So What Do The Talphera Insider Transactions Indicate?

The fact that there have been no Talphera insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. However, our analysis of transactions over the last year is heartening. The transactions are fine but it'd be more encouraging if Talphera insiders bought more shares in the company. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
