US Stock Market Sector Brief – August 8, 2026

1. Tech Earnings Recap: Divergence Has Arrived

QQQ fell 55bps as tech had a disappointing earnings night. Semis and software were hit hard (Sandisk Corporation(SNDK.US) -7%, Western Digital Corporation(WDC.US) -13%, Datadog(DDOG.US)-19%, HubSpot, Inc.(HUBS.US) -19%, AppLovin(APP.US) -20%), while select internet names bucked the trend (DoorDash(DASH.US) +3%). Earnings beats have narrowed sharply compared to Q1's AI explosion .

2. Storage: Record Profits, But Stocks Are Collapsing

Seven memory companies posted record profits, yet stocks fell 15%–47% . SNDK's Q4 showed $8.97B revenue (+51% QoQ), 84.6% GM, and $93.9B in LTA commitments — but the market has shifted from rewarding "how much profit" to discounting "how long high profits can last." Price hikes are slowing, capex is rising, and cash returns are still unproven. LTAs raise the floor but don't eliminate the cycle .

3. AI Infrastructure: Spending Is Spreading

All four hyperscalers raised capex simultaneously. The bottleneck is shifting from GPUs to power, optical interconnects, and storage. AI power semi TAM re-estimated at $48B; optical market heading to $92B by 2028 .

4. Flows: Institutions Selling, Retail Buying the Dip

TMT hedge funds lost 10.24% in July — the worst on record — triggering structural deleveraging . Retail weekly net inflow was just $3.5B (4.4th percentile), well below the $6.8B average. Retail is selling Microsoft Corporation(MSFT.US) (-$485M) and Amazon.com, Inc.(AMZN.US)(-$349M) but buying Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.(AMD.US) (+$326M), Sandisk Corporation(SNDK.US) (+$323M), and Micron Technology, Inc.(MU.US) (+$247M) on the dip. But retail alone cannot replace lost institutional capacity .

Bottom Line: AI hasn't lost its growth. But the market has moved from "does AI work?" to "can profits persist, capex pay off, and positioning hold?" The carrying capacity for tech has structurally shrunk, and strong earnings no longer guarantee higher stock prices .
