We wouldn't blame The Progressive Corporation (NYSE:PGR) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Susan Griffith, the President recently netted about US$7.9m selling shares at an average price of US$213. However, that sale only accounted for 5.7% of their holding, so arguably it doesn't say much about their conviction.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Progressive

In fact, the recent sale by Susan Griffith was the biggest sale of Progressive shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$220). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 5.7% of Susan Griffith's stake.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Progressive insiders own about US$335m worth of shares (which is 0.3% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Progressive Tell Us?

Insiders haven't bought Progressive stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. But since Progressive is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
