Some United Rentals, Inc. (NYSE:URI) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the Executive VP & CFO, William Grace, recently sold a substantial US$1.7m worth of stock at a price of US$1,133 per share. That sale reduced their total holding by 27% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At United Rentals

The President, Matthew Flannery, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$22m worth of shares at a price of US$985 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$1,128. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 19% of Matthew Flannery's holding.

Insider Ownership Of United Rentals

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. United Rentals insiders own 0.4% of the company, currently worth about US$293m based on the recent share price. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About United Rentals Insiders?

An insider sold United Rentals shares recently, but they didn't buy any. Despite some insider buying, the longer term picture doesn't make us feel much more positive. On the plus side, United Rentals makes money, and is growing profits. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
