Unum (UNM) Stock Gains Ground Despite Softer Margins And Premium P E
Unum Group UNM | 0.00 |
The market finally cut Unum Group some slack today. After drifting lower over the past month, the stock is up about 2% in live trading as investors digest a Q2 report that leans firmly on earnings power rather than headline revenue.
The core message is simple. Adjusted operating earnings per share of US$2.16 and a consolidated adjusted operating return on equity near 15.9% give bulls fresh ammunition, even as recent net profit margins over the last year sit well below the prior year. The question now is whether this premium priced insurance stock, at a P/E of 18.8x, truly earns that confidence.
Love Unum Group's earnings power but concerned about paying a premium P/E multiple while recent margins look softer? Take a look at our hand picked list of list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (48 results).

Unum Group bull story faces a real margin test
Bulls argue Unum Group is a higher quality, earnings driven insurer that can compound through recurring premiums, digital tools and reduced LTC risk. Q2 supports parts of that story. Adjusted operating EPS of US$2.16 grew while consolidated adjusted operating ROE held near 15.9%, helped by a group benefits ROE above 25% and a record Colonial Life quarter with a 46.7% benefit ratio. Core premium growth of about 3.6% and Unum U.S. sales up 7.4% show the franchise is still pulling in business, with roughly half the U.S. in force tied to HR Connect, Total Leave and Broker Connect. The new US$3.8b LTC reinsurance deal, which removes the remaining individual LTC reserves in Fairwind, clearly advances the de risking milestone.
That said, group disability ran above the 62% to 64% target and Unum International income fell, so the clean, broad based margin story is not fully in place yet.
Bear case on risk and reliance not fully confirmed
The main pushback on Unum Group is that benefit ratio pressure, lingering LTC volatility and dependence on in force blocks could undermine the quality story and justify caution. Q2 gives bears some support. Group disability’s 65.8% benefit ratio sat above management’s 62% to 64% expectation. U.K. group income protection ran at about an 82.2% benefit ratio and Unum International operating income dropped to roughly US$24m from US$41.6m, which aligns with worries about claim severity abroad. Closed Block risk is not entirely quiet either, with the net premium ratio rising to about 97.8% and group LTC case terminations reaching roughly 10% of cases since year end 2025.
At the same time, RBC of around 480%, US$1.5b of holding company liquidity and reaffirmed EPS guidance push back on fears of immediate capital strain or a broken earnings profile.
