- Mexico's antitrust commission said on Thursday it had resolved a case over a lack of competition in the mobile operating system market stemming from business practices related to Android.

  • As part of the ruling, the commission accepted commitments from Google to remove contractual restrictions that had prevented mobile device manufacturers from freely producing and distributing devices using operating systems other than Android.

  • The decision follows similar remedies accepted by antitrust authorities in other countries over Google’s Android contracts, the statement said.

  • Device manufacturers will gain more freedom to design and sell products with alternative operating systems, potentially reducing costs tied to different technology configurations.

  • Software developers will benefit from a more open ecosystem that encourages innovation and new applications, the commission said.

  • The commission said it will monitor compliance and exercise its authority in digital markets to investigate practices that restrict consumer choice.
