Investors have a new gauge to assess the markets before they open in the West, as Bloomberg reports that South Korea’s technology-heavy Kospi Index is gradually becoming a new benchmark for global artificial intelligence trade.

A Shared Volatility Ecosystem

Bloomberg data highlights that the 60-day correlation between the Kospi and the Nasdaq 100 now stands at 0.46. This is three times more than its five-year average of 0.16.

This correlation is fueled by leveraged trading in the stocks of SK Hynix Inc. (NASDAQ:SKHY) and Samsung Electronics Co. (OTC:SSNLF).

Ivan Feinseth, chief investment officer at Tigress Financial Partners, told Bloomberg that Korea is now part of the “same volatility ecosystem as the Nasdaq and SOX,” adding that SK Hynix and Samsung now act as a pre‑market read‑through.

Feinseth also said that Korea was no longer "a distant emerging-market sideshow."

Shifting Investment Rituals

As global portfolio managers have been tracking Korean shares and SK Hynix’s U.S.-listed depositary receipts, Hani Redha, a London-based portfolio manager at PineBridge Investments, told Bloomberg, “We are all Korean investors now."

Tai Hui, chief market strategist for Asia Pacific at JPMorgan Asset Management, also explained that he hasn’t presented Korea to his global team “until this year."

Navigating the New Normal

Despite a recent 30.57% tumble to 6,516.27 points from its 52-week high of 9,385.59 points, the Kospi benchmark remains up 54.63% year-to-date and 104.40% for the year. It was also 28.02% lower over the last month, leaving fund managers to deal with leverage-driven swings.

"This is the new normal investors have to accept, as long as the AI rally continues," said Chisa Kobayashi, Japan equity strategist at UBS SuMi TRUST Wealth Management. She adds that the stock moves “can deviate from fundamentals” as leveraged trades on emerging markets like South Korea’s Kospi become popular.

How Have Markets Performed In 2026?

The S&P 500 index has advanced 8.74% year-to-date. Similarly, the Nasdaq Composite index was up 9.83%, and the Dow Jones gained 7.78% YTD.
