Walmart Inc. Just Beat EPS By 7.7%: Here's What Analysts Think Will Happen Next
Walmart Inc. WMT | 0.00 |
It's been a sad week for Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT), who've watched their investment drop 10% to US$104 in the week since the company reported its quarterly result. The result was positive overall - although revenues of US$188b were in line with what the analysts predicted, Walmart surprised by delivering a statutory profit of US$0.80 per share, modestly greater than expected. This is an important time for investors, as they can track a company's performance in its report, look at what experts are forecasting for next year, and see if there has been any change to expectations for the business. So we gathered the latest post-earnings forecasts to see what estimates suggest is in store for next year.
Following the latest results, Walmart's 37 analysts are now forecasting revenues of US$752.1b in 2027. This would be a credible 2.2% improvement in revenue compared to the last 12 months. Per-share earnings are expected to increase 3.8% to US$2.88. Yet prior to the latest earnings, the analysts had been anticipated revenues of US$752.3b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$2.90 in 2027. The consensus analysts don't seem to have seen anything in these results that would have changed their view on the business, given there's been no major change to their estimates.
The consensus price target fell 6.9% to US$128, suggesting that the analysts might have been a bit enthusiastic in their previous valuation - or they were expecting the company to provide stronger guidance in the quarterly results. Fixating on a single price target can be unwise though, since the consensus target is effectively the average of analyst price targets. As a result, some investors like to look at the range of estimates to see if there are any diverging opinions on the company's valuation. The most optimistic Walmart analyst has a price target of US$155 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at US$81.00. As you can see, analysts are not all in agreement on the stock's future, but the range of estimates is still reasonably narrow, which could suggest that the outcome is not totally unpredictable.
Another way we can view these estimates is in the context of the bigger picture, such as how the forecasts stack up against past performance, and whether forecasts are more or less bullish relative to other companies in the industry. The period to the end of 2027 brings more of the same, according to the analysts, with revenue forecast to display 4.5% growth on an annualised basis. That is in line with its 5.4% annual growth over the past five years. Juxtapose this against our data, which suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the industry are forecast to see their revenues grow 5.1% per year. It's clear that while Walmart's revenue growth is expected to continue on its current trajectory, it's only expected to grow in line with the industry itself.
The Bottom Line
The most obvious conclusion is that there's been no major change in the business' prospects in recent times, with the analysts holding their earnings forecasts steady, in line with previous estimates. Happily, there were no real changes to revenue forecasts, with the business still expected to grow in line with the overall industry. The consensus price target fell measurably, with the analysts seemingly not reassured by the latest results, leading to a lower estimate of Walmart's future valuation.
