Warsh says it's 'unhelpful' for Fed officials to opine on where rates should be

- Kevin Warsh, nominated by President Donald Trump to lead the U.S. Federal Reserve, on Tuesday said too many central bank officials offer opinions on where interest rates ought to be in advance of policy decisions.

"That's unhelpful," Warsh said during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Banking Committee. Warsh said he is disdainful of the practice of offering forward guidance about where rates are headed and rate-setting meetings should be "messier."

"I tend to favor messier meetings than some, where people don't show up with rehearsed scripts, but we can have a good family fight," Warsh said. "If the central bank has that good family fight, I think that they're going to make better decisions, and if they happen to make mistakes, they'll correct them sooner."
