WeRide just added 4% in regular trading, which is a sharp move for a stock that has been drifting over the past three months. The pop came against a headline set of Q2 numbers that still show heavy losses but very fast revenue expansion. Revenue reached about RMB 232 million in the quarter, with management emphasizing the surge in higher level advanced driver assistance systems and an improving gross margin of 37.5% as the key reasons this report matters.

Is WeRide trading at a steep discount that reflects genuine long term potential, or do the heavy ongoing losses justify the current price? Compare the implied upside and risk trade off in our valuation analysis for WeRide

WeRide bull case: scale, data and margin tests

Optimists argue that WeRide can turn its global robotaxi and ADAS businesses into a high margin, software heavy platform as scale builds. Q2 gives some support. Revenue more than doubled year on year, with L2+/L3 sales ramping very sharply as mass production started. That backs the idea that WePilot style ADAS can spread fixed R&D over a much wider base. L4 robotaxi revenue grew solidly and the fleet expanded to about 3,400 vehicles, while overseas markets contributed roughly 40% of group revenue. Gross margin reached 37.5%, up meaningfully from last year, and operating expenses grew slower than revenue. These are the kind of milestones bulls wanted to see on utilization, mix and operating leverage. The share price gain of about 4% after results suggests investors are at least partly crediting this execution.

WeRide bear case: cash burn, losses and execution risk

Skeptics worry that WeRide’s heavy losses and regulatory and partner dependence could swamp the growth story. Q2 numbers leave that concern very much alive. Net loss remained close to RMB 401 million and EBITDA loss was RMB 335 million, only modestly better than a year ago despite very rapid top line growth. R&D spending rose 36% to RMB 434 million, which keeps cash burn elevated even as gross margin improves. The asset light model still hinges on partners like Uber, regional fleet operators and OEMs converting pilots into durable, profitable scale. Management is targeting single quarter positive cash flow in 2028 and full year breakeven in 2029, which confirms a long runway of execution and funding risk. The stock’s roughly 17% decline over 90 days shows that investors have not looked through these issues yet.

With losses still heavy and R&D spend high, the real question is whether WeRide’s cash, debt and burn rate comfortably cover management’s long runway to breakeven. Check the full financial health analysis of WeRide stock.
