Baidu Investment Narrative Recap

To own Baidu today, I think you need to believe its heavy AI and autonomous driving spend can eventually translate into healthier margins, while the legacy online marketing business stabilizes. Apollo Go’s London and Hong Kong advances support the long term global AI story, but they do little to ease the near term pressure from weak ad monetization, negative free cash flow, and uncertainty around when AI search begins to contribute meaningfully.

The proposed adoption of New Articles of Association to align with Hong Kong Listing Rules looks largely administrative to me and does not materially change the near term thesis. In contrast, Apollo Go’s expanding international footprint, including London, sits squarely within the key catalyst of capital efficient global robotaxi partnerships, even as it also heightens the existing risk around regulatory and geopolitical exposure outside China.

Yet beneath the excitement around Apollo Go’s expansion, investors should also be aware that...

Some of the most optimistic analysts see Apollo Go’s global push very differently, expecting Baidu’s revenue to grow about 19% annually and earnings to reach roughly CN¥39.5 billion, so if Apollo Go’s London and Hong Kong milestones reshape those views, it could reinforce just how far apart reasonable opinions on Baidu’s future can be.
