The Egyptian Football Association is dissatisfied with the refereeing of the Argentina match and insists on the national team's rights.
Cairo, July 8 (Reuters Sports Service) - The Egyptian Football Association expressed its deep dissatisfaction with the refereeing performance in the match that the national team lost 3-2 to Argentina in the round of 16 of the World Cup on Tuesday.
The Egyptian Football Association said in a statement on its website on Wednesday: "The Egyptian Football Association expresses its deep dissatisfaction with the performance of the refereeing team that managed the Egypt-Argentina match yesterday, led by French referee Francois Letix, and with some of the decisions related to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, which raised many questions, especially in light of the widespread criticism directed at this performance by many media outlets and sports analysts."
"The Federation affirms its commitment to the rights of the national team, and its keenness to take all measures guaranteed by the regulations to preserve fairness and the integrity of the competition."
Egypt squandered a 2-0 lead after scoring one goal in each half through Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Abdel Raouf (Zico), only to concede three goals in the last ten minutes and lose the chance to advance to the quarter-finals.
The French referee angered the Egyptian national team's coaching staff by disallowing a goal by Zico in the 62nd minute. This goal, which came after a brilliant attack thanks to Haitham Hassan's skill and Mohamed Salah's pass, was disallowed after a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, which found that Marwan Attia had committed a foul against Lisandro Martinez at the beginning of the attack.
He also refused to consult video technology to award a penalty to Salah, allowing the ball to bounce back and give Argentina the winning goal in stoppage time.
The statement added, "Despite the end of the team's journey in the tournament, the pride in what our players presented will remain, after they showed commitment and a fighting spirit that earned everyone's respect, and presented an honorable image of Egyptian football."
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan launched a scathing attack on FIFA after the loss, accusing it of favoring the defending champions for marketing reasons.
Argentina, the 2022 World Cup champions in Qatar, will meet Switzerland in the quarter-finals next Sunday in Kansas City.
