Al-Dawsari is participating in the World Cup for the third time in a row after being selected for the Saudi Arabia squad.
June 1 (Reuters Arabic Sports Service) - Saudi Arabia captain Salem Al-Dawsari will participate in the World Cup for the third time in a row after being named in a 26-man squad for the tournament to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico later this month.
Al-Dawsari (34 years old) participated in the last two editions of the World Cup, 2018 in Russia and 2022 in Qatar, and scored the winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Argentina, who later won the 2022 World Cup title.
The Greek coach Giorgos Donis, the new coach of Saudi Arabia, selected the final squad of 26 players, following the 2-1 loss to Ecuador in New Jersey on Sunday.
This was the first match for Donis, who took over in April of last year and will remain in charge until July 2027, succeeding Frenchman Herve Renard, less than two months before the start of the World Cup in North America.
Donis excluded four players from the initial squad of 30 players.
Saudi Arabia will compete in the World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, in Group H alongside European champions Spain, two-time world champions Uruguay and Cape Verde.
Saudi Arabia will open its World Cup campaign against Uruguay on June 16, before facing Spain five days later, and then concluding the first round against Cape Verde on June 27.
