July 9 (Reuters) - The Standard & Poor's 500 and Nasdaq Composite indexes edged higher at the start of trading on Thursday, as gains in chipmakers offset renewed geopolitical concerns after a fresh exchange of attacks threatened to prolong the conflict between the United States and Iran and keep markets volatile.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 98.9 points, or 0.19 percent, to 52,249.44. The S&P 500 rose 8.9 points, or 0.12 percent, to 7,491.6. The Nasdaq Composite gained 47.7 points, or 0.18 percent, to 25,918.31.
