WASHINGTON, May 12 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty McCurry had resigned in the latest leadership change at the federal health department, following weeks of speculation and mounting pressure.
Two sources familiar with the matter said that Kyle Diamantas, the FDA's deputy director for food security, will take over temporarily. Politico was the first to report the news.
Trump told reporters, "Marty is a great guy, but he's going to get on with his life and live a good life. He was having some difficulties... and the vice president will take over temporarily until we find someone else."
The two sources and three other sources said McCary's departure comes after weeks of mounting pressure from powerful Republicans, anti-abortion groups, and the editorial board of The Wall Street Journal, as he clashed with senior officials at the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services.
Reuters and other media outlets reported on Friday that Trump had approved a plan to fire him.
