- Spending on nuclear weapons by the world's nine nuclear-armed states rose by about a fifth in 2025 to $119 billion, a report by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons said on Tuesday.

This 19 percent increase compared to 2024 resulted in the highest level of spending on nuclear weapons since the campaign began tracking annual nuclear weapons spending for the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel in 2020.

  • The United States spent $69.2 billion, more than all other nuclear powers combined, and saw the largest increase of 22 percent.

  • The campaign says the United States is increasing military spending overall in addition to strengthening its nuclear arsenal.

  • China came in second with a seven percent increase to $13.5 billion.

  • Britain overtook Russia to claim third place in spending, with a 17 percent increase to $12.6 billion. Russia spent $9.5 billion, a six percent increase.

  • The campaign, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017, seeks the complete elimination of nuclear weapons.
