Belgium goalkeeper Courtois is considering retiring from international football after the World Cup.

- Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said on Thursday that he is considering ending his international career after the World Cup, as his country prepared for their opening Group G match against Egypt in Seattle.

Courtois, 34, who has made 109 international appearances since his debut in 2011, indicated that it may be time to pass the torch after the tournament hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.

"I don't know if it's appropriate to talk about the future now, but the possibility of me not continuing after this tournament seems greater than my staying," he told reporters at the Belgian national team's camp.

He added, "I still want to play for several more years, but in the end you have to take care of your body. My family is here because this could be my last tournament."

The Real Madrid goalkeeper did not completely close the door on continuing, explaining that he might reconsider his decision.

He said, "If we achieve good results in the World Cup, and the positive atmosphere within the group continues, then things may change. Then I will need to discuss the matter with the coach, (the technical director of the Belgian Football Association) Vincent Mannaert, as well as with the medical staff."

Courtois explained that being allowed, under former coach Domenico Tedesco, to skip some international breaks contributed to reinforcing this thinking.

He added, "I noticed that during international breaks you can get some rest and work quietly inside the gym."

He continued, "Over the past year and a half, I've had some minor physical problems and injuries, which naturally makes you think more about the future."

He pointed to the existence of a promising generation capable of taking responsibility, saying, "I am thinking of handing over the reins, as there are many rising talents."

Courtois expressed his enthusiasm for facing Egypt on Monday, saying, "Yes, I am very excited, like the rest of the team. I feel very good and I am looking forward to this match."

He concluded, "I worked hard during the spring to come back, and the muscle injury I suffered was unfortunate because I felt at my best at the time. But now I am ready to maintain my level and focus."

Belgium is also in the same group as Iran and New Zealand.
