Zawya - Press Releases: Emerson and Saudi Aramco implement an AI-based solution aimed at increasing refinery productivity and improving operational efficiency.

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia – Emerson, a global leader in automation, announced the successful implementation of one of its AI-based solutions for Saudi Aramco, one of the world’s largest integrated energy and chemicals companies. This collaboration began with the integration of Emerson’s Aspen Hybrid Models as part of Saudi Aramco’s existing refinery planning framework, resulting in one of the world’s largest multi-site and multi-period process optimization models .

By combining fundamental principles-based models, deep industry expertise, and purpose-built artificial intelligence techniques, Aspen Hybrid Models enables the detection and recording of nonlinear relationships in production and quality indicators, significantly enhancing the accuracy of refinery planning models. This solution has successfully predicted production and quality in key refinery units with an accuracy of up to 98.5% .

These AI-based hybrid models have been implemented in Continuous Catalyst Regeneration (CCR) and gasoline upgrading units, where they contribute to improving feedstock blending accuracy, reducing gaps between planning and execution, and enhancing the accuracy of predicting operating margins across Saudi Aramco’s global refining network.

Current efforts are focused on expanding the application of hybrid models to include hydrocracking units within Saudi Aramco's facilities. This expansion is expected to improve model accuracy and enhance the scalability of this AI-based approach across the company's various operations .

The key benefits that Saudi Aramco seeks to achieve through "Aspen Hybrid Models " include :

  • Production and quality forecasting accuracy reaches 98.5%, contributing to increased production volume and improved flow quality across various feedstock types and operating conditions.
  • Improving efficiency through optimal feedstock blending, thereby diversifying feedstock sources and blending recipes to achieve more profitable and sustainable operations.
  • Reducing the gap between planning and execution, by minimizing discrepancies between plans and actual unit performance and reducing the need for manual adjustments.
  • Enhancing the accuracy of models by monitoring and recording complex nonlinear correlations in biological processes such as reactors
  • Improving operational efficiency by automating model updates and reducing the need for manual adjustments.
  • A scalable, global solution that supports the applicability of models across a wide range of refining operations worldwide.

Aramco utilizes Aspen Hybrid Models , developed and deployed as part of Emerson’s AspenTech Performance Engineering, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain product suite. This has enabled Saudi Aramco to create highly accurate, nonlinear optimization models using thousands of convergent simulations, built upon precise baseline models calibrated with actual plant operating data. This approach provides a powerful and scalable tool for refinery planning globally .

Claudio Fayyad, Chief Technology Officer of Emerson's Aspen Technologies unit, said: "Saudi Aramco continues to set leading standards for operational excellence through digital innovation. Thanks to its role in improving complex, multi-site, and multi-period planning processes, the deployment of Aspen Hybrid Models reflects the tangible value of combining deep industry expertise with advanced AI technologies. We are pleased to expand our strategic partnership with Saudi Aramco as it moves forward on its digital transformation journey ."
