Zawya - Press Releases: Dubai Supreme Council of Energy reviews the performance of the Sustainable Development Goals in the emirate

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, chaired the Council’s 95th meeting, which was held virtually, in the presence of His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Council.

The meeting was attended by His Excellency Ahmed Butti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Council, and Council members including His Excellency Marwan Bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, His Excellency Abdullah Bin Kalban, Managing Director of Emirates Global Aluminium, His Excellency Hussain Sultan Lootah, Group CEO of ENOC, Juan Friel, General Manager of Dubai Petroleum Establishment and DOSPE, and Mona Al Asimi, Executive Director of Strategy and Corporate Governance at the Roads and Transport Authority.

The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy reviewed the performance of the Emirate of Dubai in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and adopted the results of measuring greenhouse gas emissions for 2025, which showed a continued decrease in the Emirate’s carbon footprint, reflecting the progress made in implementing policies and initiatives that support sustainability and the transition towards a green economy.

This achievement is attributed to a number of key factors, most notably increased energy production from clean sources, rationalization of electricity and water consumption, increased operational efficiency in various sectors, and the expansion of the use of environmentally friendly vehicles.

The council also discussed the feasibility of producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from organic waste in the Emirate of Dubai, in line with global trends aimed at increasing the proportion of sustainable fuel blended with conventional jet fuel in the coming years. This initiative would provide a cleaner, locally sourced alternative for the aviation sector, utilize solid waste, and promote the principles of a circular economy in the Emirate of Dubai.

His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said: “These achievements are a translation of the vision and directives of the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, aimed at consolidating Dubai’s position as a global model in sustainable development and the green economy.”

His Excellency added that the projects stemming from Dubai’s Integrated Energy Strategy 2050 and Dubai’s Carbon Abatement Strategy 2030 have proven the effectiveness of the emirate’s strategic direction, and have succeeded in attracting investments and partnerships from the private sector at the local and global levels to implement pioneering projects in the fields of solar energy, battery energy storage, green hydrogen production, waste-to-energy conversion, waste recycling, and the construction of green buildings.

His Excellency pointed out that the Council succeeded in providing a supportive environment to accelerate the implementation of strategic projects, and to enhance cooperation and integration between government agencies and the private sector, in order to ensure the sustainability of achievements and the realization of the Emirate’s future goals in the fields of energy and sustainability.

For his part, His Excellency Ahmed Butti Al Muhairbi affirmed that the governance model adopted by the Council and continuously developed over the past fifteen years has been a cornerstone in achieving qualitative results and outstanding performance indicators. This has been accomplished through the implementation of an integrated system of programs and initiatives within the energy and water demand management strategy. These efforts have contributed to achieving tangible savings in electricity and water consumption, in accordance with a clear roadmap and a sustainable work methodology that has been in place since 2012.
