Zawya - Press Releases: Doha University of Science and Technology wins the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia Silver Excellence Awards for Excellence in Innovative Practices
Doha, Qatar - Doha University of Science and Technology has been awarded the Silver Award for Excellence in Innovative Practices in recognition of its “Student Mental Health Ambassadors” program, an achievement that reflects the university’s ongoing commitment to supporting students’ mental health and promoting peer-to-peer mental health support initiatives, as well as establishing a safe, supportive and inclusive university environment.
This award is granted by the MENA-NASA Higher Education Student Leaders and Teachers Network, which recognizes outstanding and innovative initiatives in student affairs and higher education institutions across the region. This recognition underscores Doha University of Science and Technology's leadership in adopting effective and impactful practices in student mental health and highlights its "Student Mental Health Ambassadors" program as a pioneering peer-to-peer student support initiative within MENASA-NASAPA.
Student Mental Health Ambassadors work closely with Student Counseling and Access and Support Services, with the aim of promoting mental health awareness and encouraging students to seek support through student-led initiatives, thereby contributing to building a university culture based on support, communication and concern for mental health.
Among the program's most prominent initiatives was the "Health Café," designed as a safe space where students could connect and participate in activities focused on mental health, fostering resilience and peer support. The program also included awareness campaigns aimed at reducing the stigma associated with mental health, as well as student-led workshops to promote dialogue and interaction within the university community.
This achievement reflects the positive impact of student-led peer-support initiatives in higher education institutions, and their role in promoting mental health, strengthening community support networks, and encouraging students to seek help.
Providing support when needed, which contributes to building a more supportive and safe university environment on a psychological level.
Nicole Penny, Director of Student Counseling and Accessibility Services at Doha University of Science and Technology, said: “Receiving the Silver Award in the MENASA-NASPA Awards for Excellence in Innovative Practices is a milestone we are proud of, and a testament to the positive impact of the Student Mental Health Ambassadors Program. This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to providing a supportive and inclusive university environment that places student well-being and mental health at the heart of its priorities. We also thank the program’s student ambassadors who, through their dedication and leadership, continue to promote dialogue about mental health and foster a culture of belonging and support within the university community.”
