Space42 appoints Skylo to provide direct device-to-satellite communication service via the Thuraya-4 satellite.
The integration of non-terrestrial communication networks, according to telecommunications companies' standards, with the next-generation Thuraya-4 mobile communications satellite, Space 42, paves the way for a seamless integration between mobile phone networks and satellite communications.
Abu Dhabi and Mountain View, May 11, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Space42 , the UAE’s leading AI-powered space technology company with a strong international presence, announced a strategic partnership with Skylo Technologies, the world’s leading provider of Non-Terrestrial Network ( NTN ) services, to provide direct device-to-satellite connectivity via its geostationary satellite Thuraya- 4 .
The two companies demonstrated this practically by conducting an instant two-way voice call via the Thuraya-4 satellite, without requiring a modified SIM card or any changes to the operators' existing network infrastructure. Furthermore, the technical integration between Skylo's 3GPP- compliant terrestrial communications platform and the Thuraya-4 satellite has been completed, confirming the service's readiness for commercial launch .
This strategic partnership allows telecom operators to seamlessly extend their existing network infrastructure , rather than being a separate, additional layer or a pilot solution. Device identity is verified via the SIM card itself and the same identity management framework, preserving the operator-user relationship while expanding coverage to rural, coastal, and remote areas . For users, this means staying connected even in previously unserved areas.
In this context , Ali Al Hashmi, CEO of Space Services at Space42 , said : “This partnership represents an important step in Space42 ’s strategy to solidify its global position in the field of non-terrestrial communications networks. By extending the Thuraya-4 satellite ’s coverage through a compatible communication layer , it becomes possible to integrate satellite and terrestrial networks into a single , integrated system. This translates practically into providing reliable connectivity for individuals and communities that depend on constant communication , and providing reliable coverage , meeting telecommunications standards, for enterprises , governments, and mobile network operators in remote and underserved areas, through an infrastructure based on 3GPP standards and designed for long - term expansion . ”
For his part, Parthasarathy Trivedi, co-founder and CEO of Skylo, said : “The technical integration work has been completed, and the service is ready for launch. Space42’s selection of the standards - based architecture we developed to operate the Thuraya - 4 satellite confirms the validity of our approach, which is to provide a communication layer with telecom standards , in which satellites form a natural extension of mobile networks and not a parallel system to them . This is a direct practical embodiment of the Standardized Sky concept on the ground .”
The service will be launched commercially within the coverage area of the Thuraya-4 satellite, enhancing Skylo’s presence in the field of non-terrestrial communication networks across more than 37 countries. The two companies are currently working to obtain the necessary regulatory approvals and conclude agreements with network operators in the targeted markets, with the service to be deployed gradually as the accreditation procedures are completed.
