July 1 (Reuters) - The Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing sources, that the U.S. government is in advanced talks with artificial intelligence firms to establish voluntary standards for launching new models, with an announcement likely to be made next week.
Washington is tightening controls on the release of new risk monitoring models amid concerns that advanced artificial intelligence could be misused by military intelligence agencies in China, Russia, or other countries.
The newspaper added that the standards will define the benchmarks for advanced models and timelines, clarifying who can access them in the United States and abroad.
In June, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing agencies to work with leading artificial intelligence developers to test advanced models before releasing them, and to formulate standards for them.
Reuters was unable to immediately verify the report. The White House has not yet responded to a Reuters request for comment outside of business hours.
