Egypt and the UAE welcome the US-Iran agreement and stress the need for coordination of Arab positions.
CAIRO, June 15 (Reuters) - Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan welcomed the agreement reached on ending the war with Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz during talks in Cairo on Monday.
The Egyptian presidential spokesman said that the two leaders "discussed a number of regional issues of common interest, and agreed on the importance of continuing to coordinate Arab positions to preserve the security and interests of Arab countries in the coming period."
He added, "The President reiterated Egypt's firm stance in supporting the stability and sovereignty of the United Arab Emirates... stressing that the security of the UAE and the Gulf states is an integral part of Egyptian national security, and Egypt's commitment to supporting and assisting the Gulf states and all brotherly Arab countries."
The UAE was affected by the war between Iran and both the United States and Israel, and was subjected to Iranian strikes targeting shipping and energy infrastructure.
Last month, the Emirates News Agency reported that during a visit to Abu Dhabi, Sisi reviewed with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed the Egyptian fighter detachment stationed in the UAE "in order to review the readiness and efforts made to enhance operational capabilities and prepare for various challenges."
