Introduction 1-Lebanese Health Ministry: 8 killed in Israeli airstrikes south of Beirut

To add details

- Eight people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on a highway south of Beirut on Wednesday, the Lebanese Health Ministry said, as fighting between Hezbollah and Israel continued on the eve of a third round of U.S.-brokered talks between Lebanon and Israel.

The Iranian-backed Hezbollah group and Israel continue to exchange fire despite a US-brokered ceasefire declared last month. The fighting is mainly concentrated in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces control territory they have unilaterally declared a security zone.

Security sources said Israel launched three separate airstrikes away from the main fighting in the south, targeting vehicles on the coastal highway in an area about 20 kilometers south of Beirut.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health stated that the dead included two children.

The Israeli military has not yet responded to a request for comment.

The Israeli military said it was targeting Hezbollah's infrastructure in southern Lebanon and asked residents to evacuate six towns and villages where it planned to carry out operations against the Lebanese group.
