June 15 (Reuters Sports Service) - FIFA said that Uruguay's flight from Mexico to Miami in the United States, where they will play their opening match against Saudi Arabia, was delayed by several hours due to an error by the airline.
Uruguay, based in Playa del Carmen, are scheduled to meet Saudi Arabia in Group H on Monday local time.
FIFA said in a statement: “Due to an error in the airline’s permits in Mexico, the Uruguayan national team’s flight from Cancun to Miami was delayed. The airline apologized for the inconvenience caused by this delay.”
He added that he had been in close contact with the team during the delay, and had worked with partners at the airport and operating companies to help expedite procedures and minimize the impact of the problem on the team's travel arrangements.
Coach Marcelo Bielsa told reporters that the delay did not cause problems for his team, while team captain Jose Maria Gimenez added that they made the best of the situation.
Jimenez said, "We faced some complications during the journey, and it was difficult, but we were able to rest at the hotel and arrive here later."
