- Russia's Rosatom energy company said on Saturday that a Ukrainian drone targeted the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, without causing damage to key equipment, but did create a hole in the wall of one of the machine rooms.

"This afternoon, a Ukrainian drone laden with explosives targeted the machine building of Unit 6, resulting in a subsequent explosion," said Rosatom President Alexei Likhachev in a statement.

He added that the explosion "did not damage the main equipment, but it did create a hole in the wall of the machinery hall."

Ukraine has not yet issued a comment; Likhachev described the attack as "deliberate".

Russia took control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in March 2022, and it remains close to the front lines in the region of southeastern Ukraine.

The station has been repeatedly bombed during the four-year-long war, raising fears of a nuclear accident at the facility.

Likhachev said, "We are one step closer to an event that will likely affect even those who live far from the borders of Russia and Ukraine and believe they are completely safe."
