CAIRO, May 17 (Reuters) - Israeli airstrikes killed at least eight Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, medical officials said, as ceasefire efforts to end fighting between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas faltered.
In the weeks following the cessation of its joint US-led bombing campaign against Iran, Israel intensified its attacks on the Gaza Strip, where Hamas holds sway, but Israeli forces still control more than half of the territory.
Medics reported that an Israeli airstrike killed one Palestinian near a police station and another inside a refugee camp in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip. The Israeli military said it killed a militant who posed an immediate threat to forces stationed in the area.
In a separate incident, medics in Gaza said another Israeli airstrike killed at least three people at a charity kitchen near Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip. The Israeli military stated that the strike targeted a Hamas commander developing anti-tank missiles.
Meanwhile, medical officials in Gaza reported that three more Palestinians were killed, one in a shooting incident in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, and two others in an Israeli airstrike near a bakery in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip.
The Israeli army announced on Saturday that it had killed Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the commander of Hamas’s military wing in the Gaza Strip, in what it described as a precise airstrike that targeted Gaza City on Friday.
Hamas confirmed al-Haddad's death but stopped short of vowing revenge.
Hamas leader killed in his car
The Israeli military announced that Baha Baroud, a commander in Hamas's operations unit, was killed in an airstrike on Saturday, accusing him of planning a number of imminent attacks on Israeli forces and civilians in recent weeks.
The army said Baroud posed a direct threat and was targeted with a precision strike, adding that precautionary measures were taken to minimize potential harm to civilians, including the use of precision munitions and aerial surveillance.
Health officials in Gaza reported that Baroud, along with another person, was killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted their car in Gaza City.
Indirect talks between Israel and Hamas remain stalled in order to move forward with US President Donald Trump’s post-war plan for Gaza, which aims to end the war between the two sides.
Statistics that do not distinguish between militants and civilians indicate that approximately 870 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes since the ceasefire took effect in October. Israel says that militants killed four of its soldiers during the same period.
Hamas does not disclose the number of casualties among its ranks.
