McBride: The US team will build on their big 4-0 win against Paraguay

- Former U.S. international Brian McBride told Reuters that his country's team is in a state of euphoria after its big 4-1 win over Paraguay in their opening World Cup match, which provided them with one of the most important factors needed to advance in the tournament.

The former Fulham and Everton striker, who played in the World Cups in 1998, 2002 and 2006, added that he sensed the team's cohesion during a preparatory friendly against Germany, where the four-time world champions struggled to deal with the powerful runs of players like full-backs Sergino Dest and Anthony Robinson.

The US team began its journey in the tournament last Friday with a remarkable victory that may not have been expected by some, but it formed an ideal start for the host country, which scored four goals, the most it has scored in a single World Cup match.

McBride said, "We saw the foundation of what they can offer. The way they came into that atmosphere and under that pressure, and their ability to perform effectively throughout the game, was very exciting."

McBride praised the team's attacking approach, which continued to put pressure on Paraguay's defense, increasing density in midfield and giving players space to showcase their creative abilities, something unusual for the US team.

He added, "This style will make it difficult for opponents to read their style or find defensive solutions against a team that has a diversity of talents and includes young players who will gain more confidence after their performance against Paraguay."

He continued, "The most important thing you need in the World Cup is momentum, and this momentum often brings a bit of luck and helps achieve better results than expected. But, first and foremost, it gives you the confidence to continue on the same path."

The US team is scheduled to face Australia on Friday in Seattle, a match in which McBride expects the crowd to play a major role in giving the players a morale boost to achieve a victory that will secure qualification for the next round.

He said, "The talent is there, and the ideas are clear. I hope they can deliver the same style against the strong Australian team, which will not be easy to beat."

The US team is scheduled to conclude its group stage matches with a game against Türkiye in Los Angeles on June 25.
