East Rutherford, New Jersey, June 23 (Reuters Sports Service) - It took Norway 28 years to return to football's biggest stage, but they came back in dominant form with a 3-2 win over Senegal in the World Cup on Tuesday.
The team, which won all eight of its European qualifying matches, continues to impress, thanks to its fast-paced attacking style led by striker Erling Haaland and inspirational playmaker Martin Odegaard.
"It was a great football game. This is football publicity," coach Støle Solbakken told Norwegian national broadcaster NRB after the match at New York New Jersey Stadium.
This victory follows Norway's 4-1 win over Iraq in their opening match, securing their qualification for the knockout stage.
Thousands of Norwegian fans occupied the entire central area behind one of the goals in the stadium, where they performed their famous celebration of rowers in the long 'Viking' boat.
Haaland, who apparently drew more enthusiasm from the atmosphere in the stands, easily cut through Senegal's defense to score two goals and keep his chances alive in the race for the World Cup Golden Boot.
The Norwegian players joined the fans after the final whistle and performed a rowing celebration on the pitch.
Striker Alexander Sørloth said, "It's absolutely fantastic. Today, I'm almost a little overwhelmed."
"We played against Senegal, who are a great team, and I think we were better than them. It's a crazy feeling."
Norway faces France in the final round of group matches, with both teams currently tied on six points. A win would secure top spot in the group for Norway and a place in the round of 32 against one of the best third-placed teams.
As for Senegal, their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage have diminished. They will have to beat Iraq and then wait to see if they qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
