Coach Petkovic: Algeria must believe in its abilities

- The Jordan vs. Algeria match may not look like an exciting World Cup football encounter, but much could depend on the outcome of this Group 10 match in California, which could be fraught with risks and affect the fate of all four teams.

The possibilities look complicated, but depending on the result of the match that will take place earlier on Monday between Argentina and Austria in Texas, a defeat for Algeria or Jordan could mean that either of them will be eliminated from the World Cup after just two matches.

Jordan was expected to show its solid defense in its first World Cup appearance, but it unsettled Austria with relentless and brutal counter-attacks, in an exciting match that saw both teams exchange attacks and ended with the European team winning 3-1.

The team nicknamed the Nashama has no option but to give their all against Algeria at the San Francisco 49ers stadium, as a draw on Monday may require a superhuman effort in their final group stage match against defending champions Argentina, while a loss could lead to their early exit from the tournament.

Ali Alwan, who scored Jordan's first-ever World Cup goal, said his team would build on their attacking performance, learn from defensive mistakes, and deliver a better performance against Algeria.

He said, "The smart one is he who learns from his mistakes and does not repeat them. I promise you that in the next match, God willing, we will do our best and we will be better."

Our destiny is in our own hands.

Algeria finds itself in a similar situation after its 3-0 defeat to Argentina in a match that became a solo performance by Lionel Messi, who scored a hat-trick to equal the all-time World Cup scoring record. Algeria expressed its dissatisfaction with the refereeing and filed a complaint with FIFA.

Argentina can top the group with a win on Monday, provided Jordan doesn't beat Algeria. Austria can also top the group if they beat Argentina and Jordan doesn't lose.

Algeria last participated in the World Cup in 2014, and hopes that the expanded tournament will help its talented team reach the knockout stages for the second time, surpassing its historic achievement in 1982 with its surprise victory over West Germany.

With Argentina out of the way, Algeria will be keen to give their campaign a boost, knowing they could be out of the World Cup on Monday if they lose to Jordan and Austria manage to secure at least one point against the world champions.

Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic said, "We have to make sure the team has this confidence because we know we are capable of achieving it."

He added, "Our other competitors in this group still have to face Argentina, so our fate is still in our own hands."
