1. Market Snapshot

Three major indices closed the week nearly flat — but the path was a rollercoaster. Last week's 7/23 de-leveraging gave way to stock-by-stock dispersion:

IndexLevel (Jul 30)Week %
Dow Jones52,208.06+0.96%
S&P 5007,437.63+0.40%
Nasdaq25,122.18−0.06%

📌 Huge intraweek swing: all three fell ~1.5–2.2% on Jul 29 (Fed + oil shock), then rebounded Jul 30 led by Microsoft.

Key moves:

  • Jul 29 macro scare: Fed held 3.5%–3.75% but three regional presidents dissented for a hike (first 3-vote split since 2016); Trump threatened Iran, US–Saudi airstrikes on Iraq; oil jumped (WTI +6.7% > $84, Brent +7.3% > $88); 10Y yield to 4.67%.
  • Jul 30 Microsoft rescue: Microsoft Corporation(MSFT.US)  +15.51% — Azure +43% YoY, annual cloud revenue > $100B, FCF $19.6B (beat $13.4B), FY27 capex guide cut $190B → $175B. Lifted Nasdaq from 24,443 back to 25,122.
  • Mag 7 fully split: MSFT +15.5%, AMD +13% led; META −7.95% (FCF −91% to $784M, soft guide), Tesla 20D still −27%.

This split pushed to an extreme on Jul 31 intraday — Apple sold off on a weak guide, Amazon surged on cloud acceleration (Nasdaq only +0.24% while single names whipsawed). Latest live prices and catalysts in Section 7 — Latest Live Snapshot.

2. DPWD Temperature Gauge & Index Position

DPWD is our original indicator built on three objective technical factors — MA, MACD, and RSI. Readings reflect market heat. All three indices cooled further vs last week (7/23); Nasdaq nearing extreme-defensive, S&P in defensive, Dow back to neutral — cooling continues with sharper dispersion.

IndexCloseMarket WDTEMP10Zone
Nasdaq25,122.1856.062.52Defensive (near extreme)
S&P 5007,437.6362.067.91Defensive
Dow Jones52,208.0676.078.82Neutral

Zones: ≥95 Aggressive / 85–95 Active / 75–85 Neutral / 65–75 Defensive / <55 Extreme Defensive.
Chart window: last 120 trading days (calculation uses full history).

DPWD Current TEMP10 Reading by Index

Fig 1 — Current DPWD temperature reading (TEMP10) across three major indices

DPWD Temperature Overlaid Comparison

Fig 2 — DPWD temperature trend (TEMP10) overlaid over 120 trading days

Objective read (description, not advice): Long-cycle MA structure still firm, but short-cycle MACD momentum stayed cold across the board; temperature fell further from last week — consistent with the Jul 29 macro scare (Fed dissents + oil spike), then a Microsoft-led rebound on Jul 30 that has not yet warmed the index temperature. As of Jul 30 close, cooling persists and dispersion is widening.

Index Technical Position (description, not forecast)

  • Nasdaq 25,122: Recovered Jul 29's 24,443 close but still below the 7/22 high of 25,690; 5/10-day MAs bearishly aligned; DPWD TEMP10 ~62.5 near the extreme-defensive edge.
  • S&P 500 7,438: Back above its 7/16 consolidation floor, with support near the 50-day line; the week's damage was concentrated in the Jul 29 −1.52% session.
  • Dow Jones 52,208: Strongest of the three (+0.96% on the week); industrials/value weights held it up, but it also dropped −2.19% on Jul 29 — not immune.

3. What the Market Is Trading

Theme 1 — De-leveraging Over, Dispersion Begins

Last week's 7/23 selloff was an undifferentiated "FCF-turned-negative → kill the multiple" event. This week the market switched to pricingwho actually monetizes AI vs who is still burning. Microsoft proved burn and earn can coexist with a FCF-positive, cloud-beating print; Meta showed FCF collapsing 91% — proof not every AI outlay has reached payoff. The question is no longer "is AI a bubble" but"when does your specific spend become profit?"

Theme 2 — AI Capex Narrative Rewritten by Microsoft

Microsoft cut FY27 capex guide from $190B to $175B while keeping free cash flow positive — soothing both the "spend too fast eats margins" and "cut capex hurts growth" camps at once. Stifel's Brad Reback (citing WSJ) called it:"Microsoft's investments in both AI infrastructure and its own applications are clearly bearing fruit."One print took the systemic "is the AI arms race overheating" panic back to business-as-usual "judge each name on payoff pace."

Theme 3 — Semiconductor Split Deepens; AMD Outran Nvidia on the Day

Jul 30: AMD +13%, Nvidia +2.65%, Broadcom +4.73% — semis are no longer one trade moving together. AMD led on product/catalyst momentum; Nvidia merely stabilized (20D −1.29%, repaired from the 7/23 panic but no new high thrust). The memory chain's counter-trend strength cooled a bit but the HBM upcycle thesis is unbroken.

Theme 4 — Tesla Still the Weakest Link Among the 7

Tesla bounced +3.53% Jul 30, yet remains −27.38% over 20 days and −31.32% YTD — a technical rebound inside a downtrend, not a reversal. The market keeps pricing the imbalance between big bets (Optimus / Cybercab / energy) and near-term profit; short pressure is intact.

Theme 5 — Macro & Geopolitics: the Invisible Ceiling Is Still There

Three Fed dissents for a hike and a 4.67% 10Y with a bear-steepening curve mean growth multiples still carry a rate ceiling. Middle East escalation (US–Saudi strikes on Iraq, Iranian missiles at US bases, Trump's Iran threats) keeps oil with a geopolitical premium — Brent briefly above $88. Inflation-revival + safe-haven repricing has not loosened. Jul 30's rebound digested part of the panic, but either variable can press risk appetite back down.

5. Institutions & Research

Note: Views sourced from institutional research reports.

  • Microsoft earnings (7/29 after-close, traded 7/30): Q4 revenue $90.0B (+18%), Azure +43% YoY (fastest since early 2022), annual cloud revenue > $100B; FCF $19.6B (vs $13.4B consensus); FY27 capex guide cut $190B → $175B. Stifel's Brad Reback (WSJ):"Microsoft's investments in both AI infrastructure and its own applications are clearly bearing fruit."Market voted with a +15.51% day.
  • Meta earnings (7/29 after-close): Revenue $60.8B (+28%, slight beat), but net income −14% and FCF plunged 91% to $784M (4-yr low); Q3 revenue guide midpoint $62.5B below estimate; raised capex floor $125B → $130B. eMarketer's Minda Smiley (Bloomberg):"Meta's strong revenue growth will once again be overshadowed by CAPEX forecasts."Stock −7.95%.
  • Federal Reserve 7/29: Held 3.5%–3.75%; Hammack, Kashkari, Logan dissented for a hike (first 3-vote split since 2016), signaling inflation worry; 10Y jumped to 4.67%.
  • Geopolitics & oil (7/29–30): US–Saudi airstrikes on Iran-backed militias in Iraq, Iranian missiles at US bases, Trump threats on Iran; Brent briefly > $88. Safe-haven flows went to energy and defense, not gold.
  • AI end-demand (OpenAI): CFO said July ARR exceeded the entire Q2 total — side evidence that enterprise AI commercialization is accelerating, corroborating Microsoft's Azure payoff.

6. Signals Worth Tracking

Note: Observations below, not investment advice.

  • Does Microsoft's AI payoff spill over: The rebound was Microsoft-led; watch whether Nvidia / AMD / Broadcom follow to new highs — that decides "one stock rescued the tape" vs "sector turn."
  • Meta FCF recovery / capex discipline: Whether the FCF drop is one-off (legal/restructuring charges) and capex discipline improves — key for the social-ads chain.
  • Oil & geopolitics: Whether Brent holds above $88; further Middle East escalation sets the inflation premium and safe-haven map.
  • Rate expectations: 10Y already at 4.67% with a bear-steepening curve; watch if hike expectations swing from "cuts" to "re-tightening."
  • DPWD temperature line: Nasdaq TEMP10 ~62.5 near the extreme-defensive edge — watch if 60 holds; S&P in defensive, Dow back to neutral, cooling persists amid dispersion.

7. Latest Live Snapshot (Jul 31 intraday)

Live data: Pulled ~11:00 ET / 18:00 Riyadh (AST) from Tencent westock real-time quote. Intraday levels, may differ from close. DPWD readings still use Jul 30 close.

Two heavyweight earnings after Jul 30 close re-priced the tape on Jul 31 — Apple's weak guide / Amazon's cloud acceleration — pushing Mega-cap dispersion to an extreme:

  • Apple (AAPL) −9.21%: Reported FY26 Q3 (ended Jun 27) after close — record revenue $109.4B (+16%), EPS $2.02 (+29%), but Q4 guide of 9–11% revenue growth missed the ~12% consensus; services growth slowed to 12%, Greater China slowed; Cook flagged a "once-in-a-century" memory-chip supply gap hurting iPhone/Mac/iPad — and this was his final earnings call as CEO (Ternus takes over in Sept). Guide + supply worries overwhelmed the print; ~$300B wiped out in a day.
  • Amazon (AMZN) +14.74%: Q2 revenue $200.6B (+20%), operating profit $27.5B (+43%); AWS $42.2B, +37% YoY, fastest since 2021, AI & in-house chips each >$25B annualized run-rate, triple-digit growth; raised 2026 capex from $200B to $220B. Cloud acceleration + sustained capex eased "AI payback" doubts; a dozen+ banks lifted targets.
  • Dispersion to the extreme: Same day Apple got sold on guide + supply, Amazon bought on cloud acceleration, Microsoft held its gain — the market is still re-pricing stock by stock on "AI payoff quality." Indices were nearly flat intraday (Nasdaq +0.24%) while single names swung double digits; DPWD daily readings update only at Jul 31 close.
